Linkevičius and the head of the United Nations Office at Geneva draw attention to Lithuania’s contribution to UN activities

On 15 September in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva Michael Møller. In the meeting, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy highlighted that the Director-General’s visit as we celebrated Lithuania’s membership of the United Nations testified to the fact that our close mutual cooperation was very important.

“Over a quarter of a century Lithuania has become a solid, modern and responsible member of the international community. The 25th anniversary of Lithuania’s membership of the UN is marked by the country’s significant achievements – Lithuania won a seat on the UN Security Council, chaired the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), was elected member of the UNESCO’s Executive Board for the third time. Lithuania has also held important positions in other bodies and agencies of the United Nations system. Lithuanian experts have gained international evaluation and were elected as members of various UN committees,” said Linkevičius.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed the continuity of Lithuania’s activities in priority areas of interest to the United Nations, such as promoting the safety journalists, women’s rights, and the rule of law.

Linkevičius and Møller also discussed priorities of the United Nations Office at Geneva, including the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, disarmament and human rights issues. The officials exchanged opinions on the UN reform and an election of the new Secretary-General of the United Nations.
