Linkevičius and Speaker of Slovenia’s National Assembly discuss possibilities for strengthening cooperation, key foreign policy issues

On 16 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Speaker of Slovenia’s National Assembly Milan Brglez, who was visiting Lithuania, and with members of his delegation. The possibility of strengthening bilateral political and economic cooperation and key topics on the European Union and NATO’s agenda were discussed in the meeting.

“Lithuania and Slovenia are partners within the European Union and NATO that hold the same position on a great number of important foreign policy issues. We are pleased to see an intensified bilateral political relationships and great potential in enhancing economic cooperation. We appreciate Slovenia’s decision to contribute to the  NATO enhanced forward presence battalion in Latvia. This reinforces regional security and shows Slovenia’s solidarity,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

During the meeting, participants stressed the need to maintain the EU’s unity on all the essential issues related to relations with Russia, to continue to support Ukraine and to maintain the non-recognition policy of the illegal annexation of Crimea. As regards the situation in the Western Balkans region, the Speaker of Slovenia’s National Assembly expressed his concern over the growing negative influence of third countries, stressed the need to maintain the EU’s focus and an active role in the region, promote European perspective, as well as to strengthen public diplomacy. Issues of energy security and regional cooperation were among these discussed in the meeting.

Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Slovenia were established on 22 November in 1991.
