Linas Linkevičius: reforms in Moldova – first and foremost for the people of the country

During the Munich Security Conference, Linas Linkevičius, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, had a meeting with Andrei Galbur, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova. Linas Linkevičius congratulated Moldova on the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and invited his counterpart to pay a visit Lithuania.

Mr Linkevičius assured the Moldovan Minister that Lithuania continued to be an active supporter of the countries participants in the EU Eastern Partnership and encouraged Moldova to continue its reforms and to implement the Moldova-European Union Association Agreement.

“Reforms are indispensible for the modernisation of the country. Moldova itself has the key to success,” Mr Minister said.

He underlined that Lithuania would continue to provide expert support to Moldova. There are five Lithuanian representatives in the EU High-Level Advisers’ Mission to Moldova, who offer their advice to Moldovan institutions on reforms in the banking and security sector, on anti-corruption efforts, and other matters.

Lithuanian institutions will seek to take an active part in EU Twinning projects in Moldova. They have been involved in five EU Twinning projects in Moldova since 2009, with the total value of 6.7 million euros, in the fields of food safety norms and standards, consumer protection and market surveillance, modernisation of public service, as well as strengthening of the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency and supporting the National Food Safety Agency in Moldova. The projects have secured the funding of the European Commission.
