Linas Linkevičius: Lithuania actively supports Azerbaijan’s efforts of rapprochement with the EU

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Linas Linkevičius, met with Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, who is on an official visit in Lithuania on 24 April 2017. The ministers discussed bilateral political and economic cooperation, EU-Azerbaijan relations and a security situation in the region.

“We congratulate Azerbaijan for having started official negotiations with the EU on a new legally binding agreement. We do believe that this agreement will take better account of the shared objectives and challenges the EU and Azerbaijan face,” Minister Linkevičius said at the meeting. “We appreciate an opportunity to share our experiences in the framework of the sixth already project of the EU Twinning programme in Azerbaijan and are ready to continue our mutually beneficial cooperation.”

The Lithuanian Minister thinks that Azerbaijan is one of Lithuania’s main trade partners in the Southern Caucasus region while there remains tremendous potential still to be used, thus Lithuania is interested in developing bilateral economic ties and looking for new cooperation areas. The 5th meeting of the Lithuania-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission to be held in Lithuania this autumn should contribute to attaining these goals.

The ministers also discussed a security situation in the region. Minister Linkevičius noted that Lithuania followed closely the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and supported a peaceful, negotiated settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
