Linas Linkevičius Discussed Situation in Belarus with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius had a phone conversation with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell to discuss the worrying situation in Belarus. Mr Linkevičius highlighted the importance of co-ordination and joint actions by the European Union (EU) while responding to events in Belarus.
During the conversation, the Minister stressed the necessity to make sure that Belarusian authorities abstain from using force against the opposition and media representatives.
The Minister also informed Mr Borrell about the scheduled launch of the Astravets nuclear power plant and that it was being rushed despite safety concerns and that answers to the questions by the European Nuclear Safety Regulatory Group were delayed. Moreover, Linas Linkevičius highlighted that Lithuania expected the EU institutions to get actively involved in the issue. Co-operation with the EU is important to Belarus, therefore the country must honour its commitments.
According to Mr Linkevičius, Lithuania and the EU are interested in and ready to contribute to safeguarding the independence and sovereignty of Belarus.
