LECTURE IS GIVEN AT VILNIUS UNIVERSITY ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ARCHEOLOGICAL PROJECT IN AFGHANISTAN
On 22 December at the Centre of Oriental Studies of Vilnius University, Professor Aleksiejus Luchtanas is giving a lecture on the results of the archaeological expedition (2007-2010) to the province of Ghor, central Afghanistan, which was financed by the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Department of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the lecture, the scientific leader of the expedition Aleksiejus Luchtanas will acquaint the public with the archaeological heritage of the Goro province in the context of Afghanistan’s history. Participants will see the film “The Ghor Province through the Eyes of the Archaeologist” created by archaeologist Daiva Luchtanienė and Algis Kuzmickas.Lithuanian scholars in cooperation with the Afghan Institute of Archaeology and the Heritage Protection Department in Ghor province searched for archaeological monuments and made a list of valuable heritage objects, organized training of the local experts of heritage protection.
During the expeditions in the so far not researched Afghan province, archeologists found and registered 20 new archaeological monuments: ancient settlements, cities, castles, fortresses, a Buddhist monastery, and carvings on the rocks. The wide-ranging chronology of the monuments spans from the 4th millennium BC through late Middle Ages.
The archaeological/heritage protection mission in Ghor province was carried out by the project center “Antiqua”. The scientific leader of the expedition was Aleksiejus Luchtanas. Other participants included staff of the center Daiva Luchtanienė and Robertas Žukovskis, also doctorate students of Vilnius University Ramunė Butrimaitė, Rokas Vengalis and an archeologist from the Lithuanian National Museum Inga Martišauskytė.
