Landsbergis: “We are grateful to Guatemala for its assistance and leadership in supporting Ukraine”
On June 19, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado and thanked him for the country’s assistance and leadership in supporting Ukraine and seeking Russia’s accountability for the ongoing aggression.
“We call on Guatemala to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor Russia. We invite you to cooperate in seeking the broadest possible support,” Landsbergis said. He also invited Guatemala to join Lithuania’s development cooperation projects in Ukraine, aimed at rebuilding schools, building shelters, establishing rehabilitation centres for the armed forces, and rebuilding the energy sector.
The meeting discussed experiences in countering the economic coercion of China and other autocratic regimes and the search for new markets.
Guatemalan Foreign Minister Alvarado attended the 21st International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) taking place in Vilnius from June 18 to 21.
It is the first official visit in the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Guatemala.
Guatemala is the largest economy in Central America. Over the past few years, exports from Lithuania to Guatemala have increased from EUR 5.6 million in 2020 to EUR 14.4 million in 2023. Guatemala and Central America as a whole are attractive markets for exporting fertilizers, advanced equipment, and information and communication technology services that support the use of e-government and cybersecurity solutions.
