Landsbergis: “Security issues dominate the CBSS agenda”
On June 14, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with his Baltic, Nordic, Polish, and German counterparts in Porvoo in the format of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS). Landsbergis called for taking measures to respond to the recent intensification of Russian diversion and sabotage operations in the Baltic Sea region.
“Seeing our indecision in Ukraine, Russia escalates, seeking to spread fear and uncertainty and weaken our willpower to support Ukraine. We must show that such actions will have an effect opposite to the one intended – we will only support Ukraine even more strongly, and Russia will receive an adequate response to its actions,” said Landsbergis.
During the meeting, the foreign ministers of the CBSS countries adopted a joint declaration, underlining the urgent need to strengthen resilience, preparedness, and crisis response in the Baltic Sea Region. According to the foreign ministers, as geopolitical tensions increase, strengthening and deepening cooperation in the region is essential. At the same time, the existing structures should be adjusted to today’s political landscape of the Baltic Sea Region.
“Right now, there is a special need for strong political will, close cooperation in flexible formats of the like-minded states, open conversations about how we should adapt to the new geopolitical reality and how to respond to Russia,” Landsbergis said.
