Landsbergis: "Russia has long deserved a new sanctions regime"
Today, on 2 October, the Permanent Representatives, Ambassadors of the European Union member states approved the creation of a new sanctions regime to counter Russia's destabilizing activities. This decision is a step forward in responding to the increasing number of Russian hybrid attacks in the EU and partner countries, allowing the community to react to them accordingly.
"Russia has conducted hybrid attacks and operations on the EU territory for a long time. For a long time, together with our colleagues from the Baltic states, we have called on other EU member states to create a new legal framework for sanctioning entities that contribute to hybrid operations on the territory of the EU. We have finally reached an agreement. Better late than never. Now, we will have to prepare specific packages targeting specific individuals. We cannot allow Russia to continue to breach our red lines with no response. This regime will allow us to do exactly that", Minister Landsbergis noted.
The regime is expected to be approved a week later at the Economic and Financial Affairs Council on 8 October.
