Landsbergis meets with the new Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Lithuania: “North Korea’s threat comes close to European borders”

On 25 October, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with the first Ambassador of the Republic of Korea residing in Lithuania, Joyong Jeon.

“We are confident that the opening of the Embassy will further boost political and economic ties, especially in the fields of high-tech, lasers, life sciences, defence industry, as well as academic and cultural cooperation”, the Foreign Minister welcomed the historic event - the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Lithuania.

During the meeting, Landsbergis underlined that the countries are like-minded and commited to preserving the rules-based international order, discussed regional and global security challenges, including North Korea‘s deployment of troops and weapons to Russia, thus contributing to its military aggression against Ukraine.

“The dispatch of North Korean troops to Russia is in direct violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the Charter of the United Nations. It is essential that South Korea and other like-minded countries contribute more actively to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s aggression,” said the Foreign Minister.

Bilateral trade between Lithuania and the Republic of Korea in the first half of 2024 increased by 24% to EUR 116 million compared to the same period last year.  The King Sejong Institute has been operating in Lithuania for ten years, contributing to cultural exchange. The Embassy of Lithuania to the Republic of Korea was established in September 2021, while the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Lithuania started operating on 1 October 2024.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Joyong Jeon, presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, on 8 October 2024.
