Landsbergis meets with Minister Cho Tae-yul: “We see South Korea as our key partner in the Indo-Pacific region”
On April 26, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, is visiting South Korea, where he met with his counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul. The meeting focused on support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s war of aggression, the threat posed by North Korea and geopolitical processes in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked the country for its USD 300 million support to Ukraine and for the decision to allocate USD 2 billion more in the coming years.
“Despite the geographical distance between our countries, the consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine are not limited to Europe, so we South Korea’s support to Ukraine and the desire to strengthen the rules-based order at regional and global levels,” Landsbergis said.
The Foreign Ministers discussed the threat posed by North Korea to regional and global security.
“Lithuania has consistently condemned the illegal nuclear programme of North Korea and the supply of weapons to Russia in light of its aggression against Ukraine,” Landsbergis said.
Bilateral economic cooperation in high added value areas such as life sciences, semiconductor and defence industry technologywas also discussed at the meeting.
“The trade turnover between Lithuania and South Korea in 2023 was more than EUR 189 million. South Korea is among the most Lithuanian laser importing countries in Asia. Lithuania is ready for new joint projects with South Korean companies,” Landsbergis noted.
The Foreign Ministers ministers also discussed opening the Embassy of South Korea in Lithuania.
“We are looking forward to the opening of the South Korean Embassy in Vilnius. This will be a historic moment for both countries. The Embassy will undoubtedly strengthen friendly relations between Lithuania and South Korea, open the door to businesses of both countries and promote human ties and cultural knowledge,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.
