The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with his Estonian counterpart, Margus Tsahkna, during his working visit to Tallinn. The Ministers discussed security challenges facing the Baltic Sea region, cooperation in assisting Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, strengthening transatlantic ties and cooperation with NATO partners.
“We need to send a message to our partners that, look, we are on the territory of hybrid attacks. People are worried. And we must send a very clear signal to the Russians that there are red lines that you do not want to cross [...] to send a message not only to Putin but also to our people. That this is taken seriously, and we are thinking about all possible ways to respond to such cases,” Landsbergis noted when talking about hybrid threats.
“Russia continues to escalate its aggression without waiting for anything, and the rain of bombs over the heads of Ukrainians, unfortunately, turns into torrential rain. Putin uses ballistic missiles and continues to pour money into strengthening his army. There is no blue sky above our heads either – hybrid warfare has become a reality of life,” Landsbergis said.
According to the Minister, the West needs a new strategy for Ukraine’s victory coming from strength and the ability to mobilize, rather than fear of escalation.
“The problem now is that the source has dried up - the source of compassion, the source of understanding, the source of the ability to act - we no longer get any water from it. We’re just trying to dig into the sand. We are looking inside more and more, getting ever more concerned with events inside the Union. We need to reload ourselves and create a new victory strategy,” said Landsbergis.
During the visit, Landsbergis will also participate in an event of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, where he will be awarded the Cross of Merit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia.
The last time the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Estonia met in Vilnius was on 18 October, during the working visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia Tsahkna to Vilnius.
