Landsbergis in Riga: “Zelenskyy’s plan for Ukraine’s victory is realistic and implementable”

On 17 October in Riga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Baiba Braže. The meeting addressed bilateral and regional cooperation, security issues in the Baltic Sea region, Russia’s war against Ukraine, the mobilization of support for the country’s fight against aggression, and other pressing issues on the international agenda.

“Lithuania and Latvia have a clear goal and vision and that is Ukraine’s victory. We all agree that Ukraine must win – there is no other way. Russia will not stop until it is stopped. We can implement Zelenskyy’s victory plan. We can increase weaponry supplies and lift restrictions on its use. We can provide security guarantees so that Russia does not attack again. Whether we go for it is up to us. All I know is that if we choose a plan other than Zelenskyy’s, we will deeply regret it later,” Landsbergis said.

While in Riga, Landsbergis also attended the 2024 Balts’ Awards ceremony. This year, the chief diplomats of Latvia and Lithuania presented the Balts’ Award  to Professor Pēteris Vanags from the University of Latvia. Vanags is recognized globally as one of the foremost authorities in Baltic linguistics.

“With this award we honour the representatives of both nations who strive to unite and enrich our cultures, labor to preserve our unique heritage and share it with the world. The strong bond between Lithuania and Latvia is crucial today. By working together, we can tackle current challenges and create a safer world for future generations of Lithuanians and Latvians,” said the Foreign Minister.

“It is a great merit of Vanags that the world knows about our beautifully-sounding languages,” Landsbergis said when congratulating Professor Pēteris Vanags.

On Thursday, G. Landsbergis also participated in the annual Riga Conference for a discussion on global security challenges.
