Landsbergis in Moldova: “We are here to express our solidarity with the people of Moldova”
On 15 October in Chisinau, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, together with the Nordic and Baltic Foreign Ministers, met with Moldova’s Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popşoi.
“We are here to voice our solidarity with the people of Moldova and support their European integration aspirations. We stand ready to continue our support to Moldova on its path to the EU. Lithuania’s experience allows us to strongly suggest that the EU membership is the best way to ensure the country’s well-being and security,” the Lithuanian Foreign Minister said at the meetings.
According to the Foreign Minister, Russia is further trying to destabilize Moldova’s domestic situation and crush its European integration aspirations. Therefore, as we believe in Moldova’s European future we must do all we can to help the country stay on the course.
“I am glad that after having been granted EU candidate country status, Moldova firmly stays on the path of reforms, consolidating the efforts of the political elite to achieve the goals of the European Union integration,” said Landsbergis.
The meetings with the representatives of the Government of Moldova resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between NB8 and Moldova on strengthening institutional capacity in the field of crisis management and resilience to hybrid threats.
The Foreign Minister of Lithuania, together with the Minister of Denmark, also visited the city of Bălți, participated in a public debate on Moldova’s EU accession at the Alecu Russo State University, and met with representatives of the city municipality, local businesses, and civil society.
In the debate at the university, Landsbergis stressed that Lithuania’s EU membership had opened up incredible prospects for economic growth and prosperity, although complex reforms and consistent efforts were needed. Moldova has already made tremendous progress on this path.
The Nordic-Baltic ministerial visit to Moldova took place on 20 October, ahead of the concurrent presidential elections and referendum on Moldova’s future relations with the European Union.
