Landsbergis in Luxembourg: "Peace plans" which do not meet Ukraine's demands are simply requests for capitulation, and would never result in a just and lasting peace

On 14 October, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis attended the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU) in Luxembourg.

"The Nordic and Baltic countries are the biggest supporters of Ukraine's victory. Together, we have already provided €15 billion in aid to Ukraine since the war began. We are aware that a defeat for Ukraine would pose an existential threat to all of us," Landsbergis said at the meeting.

"But do other EU countries feel the same threat if relatively small countries mobilize more support than all the others?", asked the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

"If we do not agree that our goal is a complete and indisputable victory for Ukraine, we will push Ukraine towards capitulation rather than peace," Landsbergis warned.

The meeting was attended remotely by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who briefed EU colleagues on the difficult situation on the frontline, the critical state of Ukraine’s energy sector due to shelling, and Ukraine’s efforts to implement its Peace Formula.

In the second part of the meeting, EU Foreign Ministers and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy discussed common geopolitical challenges, including Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and EU-UK security and defence cooperation. This appearance by Lammy at the EU Foreign Affairs Council was the first meeting of the United Kingdom's foreign secretary with EU counterparts after the country's withdrawal from the Union.

The Ministers will also discuss efforts to curb Iran's destabilising actions in the Middle East and possible responses to Iran's support for the Russian war machine, the pre-election situation in Georgia and Moldova, the situation in the Horn of Africa and Venezuela, and other issues of international politics.
