Landsbergis at the meeting with the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee: “American support is vital to Ukraine’s victory”
On 6 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with Ron Wyden, a Member of the Upper House of the United States Congress and Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, who is on an official visit to Lithuania.
The meeting focused on the security situation in the region, the need to continue military support to Ukraine, seek Russia’s accountability for war crimes, and formulate a response to Russia’s aggressive actions against allies. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also emphasized the importance of the U.S. military presence in Lithuania and security commitments to Europe. According to the Foreign Minister, Lithuania understands the need for Europe to invest in defence more. Thus, our country is taking concrete steps to boost its defence budget to over 3% of GDP and to build the infrastructure needed by allies.
Landsbergis expressed his gratitude to the long-serving U.S. Senator for his personal effort in Congress to support the development of Baltic capabilities and deploy a U.S. battalion in Lithuania. The Foreign Minister expressed his delight at the rapidly developing and extremely effective strategic partnership between Lithuania and the United States, which contributed to ensuring the security of Lithuania and the entire region.
Senator Wyden is one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine in the Senate. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it was Wyden who introduced the No Most Favored Nation Trading with Russia Act, providing the U.S. President with the authority to increase tariffs on Russia immediately.
Elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1996, Wyden is also a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. In the Senate, Wyden represents the state of Oregon in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
