L.LINKEVIČIUS GIVES A SPEECH IN THE SESSION ON NON-TRADITIONAL SECURITY CHALLENGES AT THE ASEM FOREIGN MINISTERS’ MEETING IN INDIA

On 11-12 November, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius is participating in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in New Delhi, India. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister gave a speech in the plenary session on non-traditional security challenges (food security, water management, and energy security), and presented outcomes of the recent ASEM seminar on nuclear safety in Vilnius.

The first meeting between the Foreign Ministers of the Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8) and Japan took place in the margins of the Asia-Europe Meeting. The meeting focused on current international policy issues and possibilities for closer cooperation between the Nordic-Baltic states and Japan.

L.Linkevičius presented Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council and the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Vilnius at the end of November to participants of the meeting. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister thanked Japan for taking interest in the Eastern Partnership and for future participation of the country’s experts in the Eastern Partnership events.

The Lithuanian and Japanese Foreign Ministers held a separate meeting to discuss bilateral relations at the initiative of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Fumio Kishida.  F.Kishida congratulated Lithuania on its success at the United Nations Security Council election and invited the Lithuanian Foreign Minister to pay a working visit to Japan. He also highlighted the attention of Japan’s Government to and support for the Visaginas nuclear power plant project.

During the visit to New Delhi, L.Linkevičius also met with his counterparts from New Zealand, Australia, and Malaysia.
