L. Linkevičius: Results of Eastern Partnership policy will depend on ambitious and motivating agenda
On 11 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius took part in an informal video conference that brought together the EU and Eastern Partnership (EaP) Foreign Affairs Ministers, and provided an opportunity to discuss achievements and future challenges of the Eastern Partnership.
“Achievements of the Eastern Partnership policy have always been driven by high ambition that has to be maintained and adapted to different partners’ interests and levels of involvement,” said L. Linkevičius.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister underlined the strategic value of the Eastern Partnership policy and stressed the geopolitical aspect of this policy. “Due to their European choice, five out of the six Eastern Partnership countries are under pressure from external forces. This includes frozen conflicts in Georgia and Moldova, and direct aggression against Ukraine. There is no conflict only in Belarus. Thus, we are ready to contribute to strengthening the independence and sovereignty of Belarus. But it is also difficult because Belarus fails to implement the mandatory recommendations given by international experts for stress tests on the Ostrovets nuclear power plant," said L. Linkevičius.
The Foreign Minister also stressed the need to agree as soon as possible on a date for the physical EaP Summit that should produce a Joint Declaration, setting out ambitious long term and motivating goals.
