L. Linkevičius and Azerbaijan's Economy Minister discuss bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Azerbaijan

On 10 July, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Mikayil Jabbarov chaired the sixth remote meeting of the Lithuania-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation.

“In November, we will mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. We can say that we have achieved a great deal during this period. Closer cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union would open up new opportunities for both countries. Thus, I wish you to conclude the negotiations on a new cooperation agreement as soon as possible," said Minister L. Linkevičius.

The meeting discussed bilateral cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, innovation, transport, energy, agriculture, and environmental protection. The interlocutors also drew attention to the fact that Lithuania and Azerbaijan were actively implementing Twinning projects. Two new projects will be launched soon and the total number of them will reach 11.

The bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to more than EUR 43 million in 2019. Lithuania exported goods worth almost EUR 41 million and imported goods worth EUR 2.5 million. Compared to 2018, Lithuania’s exports to Azerbaijan increased by almost 57 per cent last year, while imports from this country shrank by almost 17 per cent.

Lithuania and Azerbaijan established their diplomatic relations on 27 November 1995.
