JOINT STATEMENT OF THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND THE MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE

Lithuania is interested in effective implementation of the United Nations’ decision, established in the UN Security Council resolution No.1701 on cessation of hostilities and deployment of the UN international forces in Lebanon. Lithuania closely follows the preparations for implementation of the resolution and discussions on necessary assistance to Lebanon.

Lithuania considered forms of its possible assistance but limited forces that Lithuania could send were not on the United Nations' list of required military forces. Therefore, it has been concluded that Lithuania currently has no possibilities to contribute to the expanding UN mission in Lebanon.

Lithuania will remain interested and will follow the situation in the region and the course of the expanded UN mission, without eliminating the possibility of contributing to it in the future. This will depend both on the situation, specific needs of the mission and on available Lithuanian forces.

Lithuania has already allocated 300,000 litas (about EUR 87,000) as humanitarian assistance for persons affected by conflict in Lebanon through the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
