Joint Human Rights Ambassadors statement: International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
Conflict-related sexual violence is a deplorable and devastating practice which persists around the world. In some cases it is used as an appalling method of warfare. The widespread use of rape and other forms of sexual violence in armed conflicts demands accelerated action. It inflicts unimaginable suffering and harms individuals, families and communities. But it is not an inevitable consequence of war.
A survivor-centred and human rights based approach is crucial to preventing and responding to conflict-related sexual violence. We support the full and meaningful participation of survivors at all stages of the justice process. We also support restoring dignity of survivors, including through access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services and dedicated psycho-social support and reparations.
Changing harmful social norms and accountability are key. This includes appropriate resourcing to implement legal and policy frameworks domestically. We must also limit secondary victimisation during investigations and trials, avoiding unnecessary repeated trauma.
Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of victims and survivors never see justice for what they have endured nor receive necessary support, assistance and closure. This has to change.
We are committed to preventing these horrific acts and ending this culture of impunity for those who commit these crimes and stand with all victims and survivors of sexual violence in conflict.
