Janukonis at the meeting of the Chancellors of the EU Foreign Ministries: “Support for Ukraine must remain a EU‘s key priority”

On 9-10 December in Warsaw, Marius Janukonis, the Acting Chancellor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, participated in a meeting of State Secretaries (Chancellors) of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the European Union. The meeting outlined the priorities of Poland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

“In the current geopolitical reality, support for Ukraine must remain a key priority for the EU. During the Polish Presidency, it is essential to accelerate the delivery of military assitance, strengthen support for the Ukrainian energy sector and tighten sanctions against Russia and its accomplices. The EU must be more committed in opposing the growing alliance of autocratic states – Russia, China, Iran, North Korea – while maintaining close ties with our most important security partner, the U.S.,” the Acting Chancellor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Janukonis, noted.

Poland has chosen EU security as the main priority of its Presidency, which will focus on seven key areas: external (military), internal (addressing hybrid and migration challenges), economic, energy, food, health and information security. Special attention will be paid to the development and strengthening the EU defence industry, support for Ukraine, EU enlargement, and the enhancement of competitiveness. During the Polish presidency, the first discussions on the EU’s 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework will also begin.

The meeting of the State Secretaries of the EU Foreign Ministries is traditionally held in the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the next six months. Hungary will hand over the Presidency of the Council of the EU to Poland on 1 January 2025.
