Issues of women and security discussed at Embassy of Lithuania in Norway
The seminar “Women and Security” was held at the Embassy of Lithuania in Oslo on October 27. Dozens of participants representing Norwegian state institutions, non-governmental organizations, and media and Oslo’s diplomatic corps attended the event.
The seminar was co-organized by the Embassy of Lithuania and the International Forum in Oslo. Speakers from Lithuania and Norway shared their experiences and views on women’s participation in the field of security. The seminar was opened by the Norwegian diplomat, former NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security Mari Skåre and the former Chief Public Prosecutor and Director of the Norwegian National Authority for Prosecution of Organised and Other Serious Crime Siri Frigaard. The First Vice President of the Sorting Marit Nybakk, the former Minister of Defence Anne-Grethe Strøm-Eriksen, the former Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Gintė Bernadeta Damušis and the Ambassador of the European Union to Norway Helen Campbell were among the panellists.
During the seminar, special attention was paid to the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1325 that was adopted 15 years ago. Norway is very actively promoting the document that deals with issues telating to women, peace and security and violence against women in conflict. The agenda also falls in line with the priorities of Lithuania, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2014-2015 term. Lithuania has continuously raised the issues of, inter alia, the protection of women and children in armed conflict. Lithuania’s possibilities to make a contribution to solving the issues of women, peace and security were further increased, when the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė was elected the Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders.
