IRAQ THANKS LITHUANIA FOR EFFORTS TO STABILIZE SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY
On 15 May a meeting of Lithuanian Foreign Ministry officials with Ambassador of Iraq to Lithuania residing in Warsaw Walid H. Shiltagh took place in Vilnius.
During the conversation with Lithuanian officials the Ambassador noted that fight against terrorism is not only Iraq’s domestic aim, but the common goal of all coalition partners, and Iraqi authorities are interested in early stabilization of situation and start of economic restoration of the country.
During the meeting Ambassador W. Shiltagh thanked for Lithuanian soldiers’ participation in the coalition’s operation “Iraqi Freedom”.
“Lithuanian soldiers’ service is very important not only as military, but also as political support to democratic processes in Iraq,” Iraqi Ambassador to Lithuania said.
He also stressed that Iraqi Government would welcome Lithuania’s decision to prolong its mission up to the end of 2008. This would contribute to faster stabilisation of situation in this Persian Gulf country rich in mineral resources.
According to the Ambassador, as the security situation in Iraq is improving businessmen of many foreign countries take interest in business and investment possibilities in Iraq. Therefore Ambassador said that Lithuanian businessmen are welcome in Iraq, especially the ones working in agriculture, transport, trade in foodstuffs and medicines.
Speaking about development of bilateral Lithuanian-Iraqi relations the Ambassador W. Shiltagh urged Lithuania to establish a diplomatic representation in Baghdad.
