INTL HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY SAYS ONE CAN'T BE INDIFFERENT TO INTOLERANCE - LITHUANIAN FORMIN (BNS, 26 January 2012)

VILNIUS, Jan 26, BNS – The International Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us that we cannot be indifferent to intolerance, discrimination and hatred, Lithuania's Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis says.

"The best tribute to victims of the Holocaust is our persistent efforts to make sure that the horrific developments do not repeat again anywhere and anytime, that the human dignity is respected, that rights and liberties of every human being are defended regardless of their origin, sex, race, religion or social status," Azubalis said in a press release on the eve of the Holocaust Memorial Day.

In his words, people should cherish the memory of Holocaust victims, develop education about the historic event and support projects of the Jewish culture that has long historic traditions in Lithuania.

Lithuania's parliament had declared 2011 the year of Lithuanian residents victimized by the Holocaust.

Holocaust Memorial Day – day of liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp – is commemorated in the United States and many European countries on Jan. 27.

More than one million of men, women and children, mainly Jews, from about 20 countries around Europe died in terrible conditions in 1940-1945 in Auschwitz, the notorious World War II-era concentration camp.
