INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AFGHANISTAN WAS HELD IN THE HAGUE
On 31 March in The Hague, the Lithuanian delegation headed by Undersecretary of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Žygimantas Pavilionis took part in the UN International Conference on Afghanistan ‘A Comprehensive Strategy in a Regional Context’.
The conference reaffirmed the commitment of the international community to continue support to the reconstruction and stabilisation of Afghanistan, to aim at better coordination of common efforts, to discuss possibilities and ways to expand international cooperation by involving the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan.
“Most of economic and humanitarian problems have a regional dimension, therefore stability and economic development in Afghanistan will be guaranteed by including the neighbouring countries of the region into cooperation,” Foreign Undersecretary Ž.Pavilionis emphasized in his statement.
In order to stimulate interest of potential donors in Lithuania’s development cooperation projects in Ghor Province, Afghanistan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ž.Pavilionis and Chief Counsellor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Valdemaras Sarapinas met with the delegations of the states of the Persian Gulf that were taking part in the conference.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rangin Spanta, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Ministers of Foreign Affairs from over 60 countries, representatives from NATO, European Union and various intergovernmental and nongovernmental organisations attended the conference.
