IN VILNIUS THE MEETING OF EU POLITICAL DIRECTORS FOCUSES ON GLOBAL AGENDA ISSUES
On 8-9 July, Vilnius hosted an informal meeting of EU Political Directors of Foreign Ministries, which focused on key issues on the EU foreign policy agenda. The Political Directors discussed the situation in the Eastern Partnership countries, dedicating special attention to Georgia. The EU’s Special Adviser for Legal and Constitutional Reform and Human Rights in Georgia Thomas Hammarberg, who is to preparing a report on human rights in Georgia, provided and overview of the current situation in this country.
At the meeting, the participants reviewed key issues, which will be dealt with in the Foreign Affairs Council meetings to be held in the second half of 2013. They exchanged opinions on global issues: climate change, water security, energy diplomacy. They also discussed the situation in Egypt, Syria, Iran, and the Middle East region.
The informal meeting of EU Political Directors is traditionally held once every six months in the member state which holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The meeting is held in cooperation with the European External Action Service.
