IN VILNIUS, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER MEETS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF LIBYA’S TRANSITIONAL COUNCIL
On 20 June in Vilnius, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė received a representative of Libya’s Transitional National Council to the United Nations Shalgam Abdul Rahman and Ambassador Hafed Gaddur, who is a representative to Italy.
At the meeting, representatives from Libya’s Transitional Council acquainted A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė with the difficult situation in their country, shared their ideas about the projects and perspectives of the country’s future and assured that after the conflict the Transitional Council was ready for transition to democracy and with the help of a broad dialogue was going to ensure the protection of the interests of all Libyan people and to maintain the country’s unity and territorial integrity.The Vice-Viceminister also underlined that while supporting the democratic aspirations of the Libyan people, Lithuania is considering the National Council as the political interlocutor during this interim period.
A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė noted that Lithuania condemned the continuing human rights violations in Libya and expresses concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country, as well as at its borders with neighbouring countries.
The Vice-Minister also said that in response to the difficult humanitarian situation in the country, Lithuania has contributed to the humanitarian aid for people affected by the Libyan crisis.
Lithuania supports the international community’s efforts to seek a political solution to the conflict in Libya that would live up to legitimate expectations of the Libyan people.
