IN VILNIUS IT WAS AGREED HOW TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION LITHUANIA‘S PROPOSALS FOR THE FUTURE EU-RUSSIA NEGOTIATIONS
On 11 May Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia currently presiding over the EU Dmitrij Rupel who came to Vilnius and Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas discussed Lithuania’s proposals for the mandate to start the EU negotiations with Russia on a new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Carl Bildt and Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission Herve Jouanjean also took part in the joint working dinner in Vilnius.
The ministers coordinated the principled positions, agreed to include essential Lithuania’s proposals in written form into the mandate. Other EU Member States should approve this agreement.
“We have found the way how the mandate should reflect the questions brought up by Lithuania: the blocked “Druzhba” oil-pipeline, legal cooperation, including the January 13th, and Medininkai cases, investigation of disappearance of the EU citizens in Russia, compensation for persons deported from the occupied Baltic States, and regulation of the “frozen” conflicts in Georgia and Moldova,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister stated.
“I am glad that we have reached the principled agreement on the European Commission’s mandate for negotiations on the new Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with Russia. I am grateful to Foreign Minister of Slovenia currently holding the EU Presidency D. Rupel who came to Vilnius and was constructive and well-wishing in search for decisions for questions raised by Lithuania,” P. Vaitiekūnas said.
P. Vaitiekūnas also thanked Polish Foreign Minister R.Sikorski who started to establish strategic partnership also in the EU affairs, Swedish Foreign Minister C.Bildt for supporting Lithuania and for not leaving the “frozen” conflicts issues outside the EU interests. According to the Minister it was not the discussion about blocking or not blocking the negotiations, but constructive search for ways and forms how to take into consideration Lithuania‘s proposals.
Foreign ministers who arrived to Vilnius were received by the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus.
On 12 May Lithuanian, Polish, Slovenian and Swedish foreign ministers go to Georgia to demonstrate support to Georgia’s European integration aspirations, its territorial integrity and encourage maintaining calm in difficult situation.
