IN TWENTY YEARS, NORDIC-BALTIC COOPERATION EXPANDS IN VARIOUS FIELDS, ESTABLISHES PARTNERSHIP TRADITIONS, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER SAYS

The Nordic-Baltic partnership emerged 20 years ago and is based on the creation of the human network, establishment of new contacts and sharing of experience. Today it has a long tradition,” Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas said during the seminar for young Nordic and Baltic diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 29.

“In these twenty years we expanded cooperation in various fields from finance to defence and from cyber security to culture,” Meilūnas said.

According to him, Northern Europe has always been Lithuania’s top priority.

“We managed to fulfil our dream of freedom and felt support already when we were taking our first steps as a re-established state. Today we aim for more. This year, Lithuania, as a coordinating country, is shaping the Nordic-Baltic co-operation (NB8) agenda. Many events and meetings are held in Lithuania, we also aim to launch a joint information space for culture and education, which would join the countries into a single community,” the Vice-Minister said.

Participants of the seminar “Nordic-Baltic relations: transformation over the last twenty years”, representatives from the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and Ministry of National Defence, and international relations experts discussed future prospects and priorities of joint activities of the Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8).

Country, coordinating NB8 activities, hosts meeting of young Nordic and Baltic diplomats every spring.

On May 30, the young diplomats visited the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania and met with Member of the Seimas, Chairman of the Lithuanian delegation to the Baltic Assembly Paulius Saudargas.
