IN THE RUN-UP TO THE EU PRESIDENCY, LITHUANIA AND ROMANIA AGREE TO ACTIVELY SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO EASTERN PARTNERSHIP
On 29 May in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius held a meeting with the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Titus Corlăţean, and stressed that Lithuania highly valued and would seek to use Romania’s experiences and expert knowledge of the countries of the Eastern Neighbourhood, in particular of the Republic of Moldova. The head of the Lithuanian diplomacy also called on Romania to participate at the highest political level in the 3rd Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Vilnius this November.
Linkevičius thanked Romania for supporting priorities for the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council: “I am glad that the priorities for the Lithuanian Presidency – financial stability, smart growth, an open, safe and secure Europe, the European Neighbourhood Policy, and the protection of the EU’s external borders – are very important also to Romania. This shows our resolve to continue to address issues on the EU agenda that are significant for all EU member states.”
The Foreign Ministers welcomed the strengthening of the Lithuania-Romania economic relationship. The best example of this is the bilateral Business Forum that took place on 29 May in Vilnius and was attended by Lithuanian and Romanian businessmen working in the field of information technology, food and beverage industry, tourism and other economic sectors.
At the Business Forum, Lithuania presented experiences, gained by small and medium-sized enterprises in the absorption of the structural funds of the EU. The Romanian and Lithuanian business and investment environment, the strengthening trading relationship, bilateral meetings of Lithuanian and Romanian entrepreneurs were also presented.
During the visit, the Romanian Minister visited the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence in Vilnius, where he met with the Director of the Centre Romualdas Petkevičius and discussed with him the possibility for Romania to join the centre’s activities. Corlăţean also visited the Vilnius University and met with the Acting Rector Jūras Banys to discuss opportunities for closer cooperation between Lithuanian and Romanian universities.
