IN THE RUN-UP TO LITHUANIA’S PRESIDENCY OF THE EU, THE EMBASSY IN THE U.S. STRENGTHENS COOPERATION WITH NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS
In the run-up to Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2013, Lithuanian Embassy in the United States is actively strengthening cooperation with various American non-governmental organizations.
On 10 October, the Embassy hosted an annual meeting of the Board of Advisors of the European Institute, the leading Washington-based public-policy organization devoted solely to European-American cooperation. The meeting was attended by diplomats who reside in Washington, D.C., representatives from the U.S. Government, prominent centres for foreign policy analysis, and partner corporations.
Lithuanian Ambassador to the U.S. Žygimantas Pavilionis stressed the need to cooperate not only with representatives of the U.S. Government, but also with non-governmental organisations, which have a significant impact on the political climate of the EU-U.S. relations and call on politicians to take a new look at transatlantic cooperation.
“Lithuania is intensively preparing to hold the EU Presidency and highly appreciates the long-term support of the European Institute. Its significance will increase even more after we take the helm of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union,” Pavilionis told the participants of the meeting.
He also added that Lithuania would seek to develop the transatlantic partnership in the fields of trade liberalization, energy security, Eastern Partnership, and in other spheres relevant to the EU and U.S.
