IN TALLINN LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TO TAKE PART IN DISCUSSION, DEDICATED TO THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF ESTONIA’S INDEPENDENCE
On 20 August in Tallinn, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis together with representatives of the Baltic and Nordic countries will take part in a roundtable discussion, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Estonia’s independence. During the event, the development of the Baltic States after they regained freedom will be discussed, experience of independence period and the challenges that lie ahead will be evaluated.
A.Ažubalis will speak at the session "From 1990 to 2030. How the lessons of the last 20 years have prepared us for the challenges of the coming decades?".The discussion will address the achievements and difficulties faced by the Baltic States during the years of independence, will touch upon possible responses to emerging challenges and outline future prospects.
Ministers of foreign affairs of Estonia, Sweden, Denmark, Latvia, Iceland and Finland: Urmas Paet, Carl Bildt, Lene Espersen, Girts Valdis Kristovskis, Ossur Skarphedinsson and Erkki Tuomioja will take part in the discussions together with A.Ažubalis.
At another session of the event the current situation will be evaluated in light of the goals set 20 years ago.
After the discussion, the foreign ministers will hold a joint press conference.
Later A.Ažubalis will attend the Toompea castle, where a speech will be delivered by the President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
Estonia regained its sovereignty on 20 August, 1991, when the then Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia declared the restoration of independence.
Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Estonia were re-established on 11 January, 1991.
