IN STOCKHOLM THE PROGRESS OF IRAQ WAS DISCUSSED DURING THE REVIEW CONFERENCE OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMPACT WITH IRAQ
On 29 May, in Stockholm, Undersecretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oskaras Jusys took part in the review conference of the implementation of the international compact with Iraq, in which he presented the input of Lithuania into the reconstruction of Iraq.
The purpose of the conference is to discuss the progress that Iraq made during a year in implementing the objectives and tasks, which are set out in the international compact.
‘Lithuania supports the active role of the European Union in implementing reforms and creating stability in Iraq. As a donor country, Lithuania allots more and more finances and other resources to implement development projects in Iraq,’ said O.Jusys.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry presented to the participants of the conference the input of the Lithuanian military mission into strengthening the security in Iraq. O.Jusys also spoke about Lithuanian lead trainings of the Iraqi specialists in the areas of criminology, human rights and democratisation, and Lithuania’s financial contribution to the reconstruction of Iraq.
The international compact with Iraq is a document, which was drawn up in 2006 by the Iraqi government and the UN. Its purpose is to lay the foundation for the new period of partnership between Iraq and the international community, with the aim of helping Iraq to realize its national vision. The document provides the guidelines for the political, economic and social development of Iraq in the nearest 5 years.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, representatives from the World Bank, high-ranking delegations from more than 30 countries took part in the conference in Stockholm.
