IN STOCKHOLM, LITHUANIAN AND SWEDISH REPRESENTATIVES DISCUSSED KEY ISSUES ON EU AGENDA
On 8 December in Stockholm, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas took part in the Lithuanian-Swedish consultations on key issues of the European Union and the international agenda.During the visit, Vice-Minister E.Meilūnas met with Sweden’s Minister of EU Affairs Birgitta Ohlsson, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Frank Belfrage, Director General of the Council of the Baltic Sea States’ Permanent International Secretariat Jan Lundin and other officials.
During the conversations, officials discussed preparations for the European Council meeting, which is due on 16-17 December in Brussels. The preceding meeting will decide on the outline of a special crisis mechanism to be created to safeguard the financial stability of the euro area as a whole. Issues of the EU’s budget and of strengthening the European Union’s relations with its strategic partners will be discussed.The Vice-Minister and Swedish officials exchanged their opinions on the EU’s enlargement process, progress in implementing the EU’s Eastern Partnership initiative, the EU’s relations with Russia and Belarus, and the situation in Afghanistan.
The Baltic-Nordic cooperation within regional organizations and the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region were also discussed.
Besides, during the meetings officials discussed relations between Lithuania and Sweden.
