IN STOCKHOLM LITHUANIAN AMBASSADORS DISCUSS COUNTRY’S PRIORITIES REGARDING THE BALTIC SEA REGION
On 9 October, a regional meeting of the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic representations in the states of the Baltic Sea region starts in Stockholm.
The two-day meeting is attended by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Žygimantas Pavilionis, heads of Lithuanian embassies in Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland Latvia, Norway, Poland, Sweden, as well as the consul general in Saint Petersburg.
The aim of the regional meeting of the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic representations is to discuss Lithuania’s interests in the Baltic Sea region, energy and transport projects, Lithuania’s chairmanship of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in 2009–2010, and the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea region that is currently being drafted.
The participants of the meeting focus their attention on the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea region and Lithuania’s contribution to the preparation of this strategy.
The strategy, which was initiated in 2007 by Sweden, is expected to be adopted during the Swedish EU Presidency in the second half of 2009. At the same time Lithuania will chair the Council of the Baltic Sea States. This document is expected to promote the development of the Baltic Sea region.
In Stockholm, the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic representations will meet with the officials from the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At these meetings, the Swedish representatives will introduce the opinion of their country about the strategy and priorities of the Swedish EU Presidency.
Lithuanian ambassadors in the countries of the Baltic Sea region will also be familiarized with the Swedish proposals regarding the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea region and will also discuss the priorities of the Lithuanian chairmanship of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in 2009–2010.
