IN STOCKHOLM, LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR AND DIRECTOR GENERAL OF SWEDISH CORPORATION DISCUSS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NORDBALT PROJECT

On 12 March, Lithuanian Ambassador in Stockholm Eitvydas Bajarūnas and Mikael Odenberg, Director General of the Swedish corporation Svenska Kraftnät, discussed the implementation of the NordBalt project. The Swedish power grid and the Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid are responsible for the implementation of the Swedish–Lithuanian electricity interconnection project NordBalt.

At the meeting, Lithuanian Ambassador stressed that the NordBalt project was strategically important and would enable to integrate the Baltic electricity market with the Nordic power system and strengthen Lithuania’s energy security. He also informed Odenberg about the implementation of other strategic energy infrastructure projects in Lithuania.

According to Odenberg, the project is being implemented according to schedule. An obvious mutual political support for the project helps to bring it forward, Odenber said.

Svenska Kraftnät is a state-owned public utility, which runs the transmission grid in Sweden.

The NordBalt project is one of Lithuania’s most advanced strategic projects that aims to modernize and diversify Lithuania’s energy sector. Currently, Sweden is producing the NordBalt power cable, which is to be installed in the Baltic Sea in March 2014. The NordBalt link is likely to begin operations in December 2015.
