IN ŠIAULIAI THE ECONOMY POTENTIAL OF THE REGION IS PRESENTED TO FOREIGN DIPLOMATS

On 10 February, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas with representatives from Šiauliai City Municipality and business discussed the possibilities of investment attraction and export promotion. The Minister and representatives from the city self-governance and the city business community presented the economy potential of Šiauliai to foreign diplomats, residing in Lithuania.

During the meeting with members of councils of Šiauliai business associations and Šiauliai city administration, head of the Lithuanian diplomacy encouraged the businessmen to be initiative, courageous and to look to the future. The Minister indicated that both Lithuania and Šiauliai had a lot of potential.

Minister V.Ušackas took interest in the way the associated business structures assessed present economic situation and invited the businessmen to make concrete suggestions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on promotion of mutual cooperation. The Minister stressed that the Ministry was prepared to collaborate with business and to support it in every way: to defend and represent legitimate interests of the Lithuanian business abroad, to seek for favourable conditions of foreign trade and investments for Lithuania.

During the meeting, head of the Lithuanian diplomacy emphasized that in present-day economic situation it was important to promote export. The Minister invited the businessmen to look boarder, to search for new markets, not limiting themselves only to the European Union and Russia.

Minister V.Ušackas also highlighted the importance of foreign investments to Lithuania. He stressed that Lithuania was competing with other regions to attract investments. According to V.Ušackas, it is necessary for Lithuania to capacitate good conditions for foreign investments and to reduce obstacles for them.

“There shall be a red carpet laid out for investments,” said Minister V.Ušackas.

The Minister presented to the assembled representatives from the administration and business the ways in which the new government intended to reform the presently functioning public institutions, responsible for search of investors and export promotion. The Minister also inquired the businessmen about their needs, seeking to help to start solving the problems that are rising.

Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs is to give a lecture to students at Šiauliai University.
