IN POLAND, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MARKS THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT OF DARIUS AND GIRĖNAS

As part of the delegation led by the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius participated in the event marking the 80th anniversary of the transatlantic flight of Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas on 14 July in Poland. Linkevičius attended mass in St. Jacob’s Cathedral in Szczecin and the event commemorating the anniversary of the flight of the pilots that was held at the site of their crash in the forest of Pszczelnik. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister thanked Polish nationals for their efforts to memorialize the heroic deed of Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas in this country.

Linkevičius conferred the Foreign Ministry’s reward of honour - the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star - on the Bishop of Szczecin–Kamień Marian Błażej Kruszyłowicz, Chairman of the Szczecin Division of the Lithuanian Society in Poland Wiktor Buwelski, and the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Szczecin Wiesław Wierzchoś for their efforts to preserve the memory of the pilots. 

The transatlantic flight of Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas is marked every year at their crash site. Representatives of the local Polish and Lithuanian communities, Polish and Lithuanian politicians, and diplomats attend this commemorative event.
