IN NEW YORK LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TOOK PART IN THE INFORMAL MEETING OF COMMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES

On 26 September in New York, during the informal meeting of the Community of Democracies, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas stressed the importance of this forum and a great need to spread the ideas of democracy.

Minister P.Vaitiekūnas reminded the participants of the meeting about the historic experience of Lithuania, the recent events in South Caucasus and invited them to consider how the international community could contribute to preventing violence and use of force in international relations.

Head of Lithuanian diplomacy indicated that he supported the suggestion of Portugal to improve the visibility of the forum by establishing the Foundation named after tragically perished former Polish Foreign Minister Bronisław Geremek.

Lithuania will hold the chairmanship of the Community of Democracies in 2010.

In 1999, the Community of Democracies was launched by ten countries: the Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal, Chile, Mexico, the U.S.A., South Korea, India, Mali, and South Africa.

The main goal of the Community of Democracies is to strengthen democratic institutions at national, international and regional levels. The countries of the Community of Democracies hold a ministerial meeting once a year to review the democracy situation worldwide and to make plans for the future.
