In New York City, Linkevičius and UN officials discuss challenges facing the international community

On 28 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, who is visiting New York City, held meetings with Mogens Lykketoft, President of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, Tayé-Brook Zerihoun, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, and Levent Bilman, Director of the Europe Division in the Department of Political Affairs at the United Nations. The meetings discussed the United Nations’ endeavours to strengthen international peace and security, Russian aggression against Ukraine, the fight against terrorism, migration issues, the UN reform agenda and the election of the next UN Secretary-General.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked the President of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly for his personal contribution to a more efficient, effective and transparent UN, and the electoral process of the UN Secretary-General.

“The ongoing conflicts around the world, including aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of European countries, remind us that the entire international community needs to intensify efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts. Lithuania, therefore, highly appreciates your hard work to ensure a more efficient and transparent UN,” said Linkevičius.

In the meetings at the United Nations, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also underlined the international community’s responsibility to find ways to prevent conflicts, the spread of extremism and terrorism, human rights violations, as well as to address migration issues.

“We have to make a joint effort to ensure further progress in the application of the principles of respect for human rights, democracy and equality to international affairs” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.
