IN MUNICH, ISSUES OF SECURITY AND BILATERAL RELATIONS WERE DISCUSSED

While attending the Munich Security Conference, on 6 February Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas and NATO’s Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer discussed issues that are essential for Lithuania’s security: the future of the air police mission and participation in NATO’s missions and operations. During the meeting, reforms that are implemented in Georgia and Ukraine, while seeking to draw closer to NATO, were also discussed.

NATO’s Secretary General J.de Hoop Scheffer thanked for Lithuania’s input into reconstruction of the Ghor Province, Afghanistan, and informed that he planned to visit the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in the spring.

On the subject of NATO’s air police mission in the Baltic States, NATO’s Secretary General expressed a clear opinion that this mission had to be continued.

During the meeting, preparation for the Alliance’s anniversary Summit, the future of Europe’s security and perspectives of cooperation with Russia were also discussed.

In Munich, Minister V.Ušackas also met with his colleagues from the EU and NATO countries, as well as with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia Antonio Milososki. Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Macedonia discussed preparation of this country for the NATO and EU membership, other bilateral issues of political and economic cooperation.
