IN MINSK, A DISCUSSION OF HISTORIANS WAS ORGANISED ON THE OCCASION OF THE DAY OF RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF LITHUANIA
While celebrating the Day of Re-establishment of the Independence of Lithuania and continuing the series of events that are marking the millennium of Lithuania, on 11 March the Lithuanian Embassy in Belarus organised a round table discussion of the Lithuanian and Belarusian historians and intellectuals. The round table discussion “The Millennium of Lithuania. Lithuania and Belarus Side-by-side for 1000 Years” was opened by Undersecretary of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius, Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus Edminas Bagdonas and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Valery Voronetsky.
During the discussion, Lithuania was represented by head of the Department of Theory of History and Culture History at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University Prof. Dr. Alfredas Bumblauskas, Head of the Department of Ancient and Medieval History at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University Dr. Rimvydas Petrauskas, Docent of the Lithuanian Institute of History, Hab. Dr. Alvydas Nikžentaitis and Head of the Palaeography Department of the Lithuanian Institute of History, Dr. Artūras Dubonis.
The views of the Belarusian historians was presented by lecturer of the European Humanities University, historian Henadziy Saganovich, historian and writer Vladimir Orlov, scholar, writer, Honorary President of the International Association for Belarusian Studies Adam Maldzis, Director of the Belarusian Research Centre of Electronic Records Vyacheslav Nosevich, Professor of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Georgy Golenchenko, lecturer of the Institute of Study of Arts, Ethnography and Folklore of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Igor Chakvin, lecturer of the Faculty of
History of the Belarusian State University Vasili Varonin and member of the Belarusian Historical Society Alesi Kravcevich.
Historians of both countries acknowledged that the previous discussion of historians was held at such a level in 1993. H.Saganovich thanked the Lithuanian Embassy for initiating the event and was glad that the historians of the neighbouring states were ready to open a dialogue.
The Lithuanian Embassy intends to continue organising discussions of historians and intellectuals of both countries, dedicated to mark memorable dates of the Lithuanian and Belarusian history.
