IN LUXEMBURG, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER IS TO ATTEND THE EU’S FOREIGN AFFAIRS COUNCIL AND GENERAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL
On 23-24 April in Luxemburg, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis is to attend meetings of the EU Foreign Affairs Council and General Affairs Council.
At the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the ministers will discuss the situation in Afghanistan and aspects of EU policy towards the country. The meeting will also discuss the situation in Burma/Myanmar, also developments in Mali and Syria and the Middle East peace process. The meeting will also review results of talks with Iran on its nuclear program.The General Affairs Council meeting will continue political discussions on the EU’s new financial perspective 2014-2020. Participants of the meeting will also discuss key negotiating points with regard to Cohesion Fund, funding instrument for Europe’s infrastructure networks and the Common Agricultural Policy.
In June, Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU is to submit a summary of results of the discussions to the European Council.
The meeting will also aim to achieve a partial agreement on Cohesion policy law projects, stipulating rules for the absorption of the EU structural funds in 2014-2020.
A meeting of the Nordic and Baltic Foreign Ministers will take place before the Foreign Affairs Council. On the eve of the General Affairs Council meeting, Ažubalis is participating in the meeting of the Group of Friends of Cohesion Policy. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Spain and Portugal are actively engaged in the activities of this group.
