IN LONDON, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER PARTICIPATED IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LIBYA
On 29 March in London, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the International Conference on Libya. The conference was organized by the United Kingdom and dedicated to the situation in Libya and possible further role of the international community in finding solution to the crisis in this country.
The goal of the conference is to mobilize efforts of the international community for enforcement of sanctions authorized under the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973, and the protection of civilians from violent attacks in Libya.Lithuania speaks up for a close coordination of actions between the UN, the European Union, NATO and other international partners, and especially stresses the participation of regional organizations - the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference - in solving the crisis in Libya.
Lithuania supports international community’s efforts to contribute to humanitarian assistance and protection of civilians in Libya. The Government of Lithuania decided to allocate funds for humanitarian aid that will be distributed through the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The participants of the conference restated that it was important to fully and smoothly implement the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973, and for the international community to commit to respect Libya’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity. They agreed to continue to make every effort to ensure that the provisions of the resolution would be implemented.
The participants of the conference once again called on Muammar Qadhafi to immediately stop the attacks on civilians. They also agreed in the future to discuss possibilities for the UN and regional organizations to take additional sanctions against individuals and the organizations that are associated with Qadhafi’s regime.
