IN LISBON, TROIKA OF THE COMMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES LOOKS FOR WAYS TO USE THE COMMUNITY’S POTENTIAL MORE EFFECTIVELY
On 23 January in Lisbon, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas took part in the meeting of the Troika of the Community of Democracies. The past, present, and future chairs of the Community – head of diplomacy of Mali Moctar Ouane, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Luis Amado and Lithuanian Foreign Minister V.Ušackas – discussed possible ways to use the potential of the Community more effectively while aspiring to common goals in international organizations.
The Ministers noted necessity to continue strengthening support to democracy defenders and to share experience of democratic governance more actively.
Head of Lithuania‘s diplomacy said that Lithuania, which this year starts the chairmanship of the Community of Democracies, values the activities of the current Portuguese chairmanship in implementing the goals of the organization. Lithuania is determined to continue the same activities, but will enrich them by Lithuania‘s experience in fostering and spreading of values.
The Community of Democracies was established in 1999, it is an intergovernmental organization of democracies and democratizing countries. The goal of the Community is to strengthen and deepen democratic norms and practices worldwide. The Community of Democracies acts in compliance with the Charter of the United Nations and Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
