IN KAZAKHSTAN LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS DISCUSSED IMPORTANT ISSUES OF BILATERAL COOPERATION

On 5 September Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas is paying a working visit to Kazakhstan. P.Vaitiekūnas and Kazakhstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Marat Tazhin discussed the cooperation between Lithuania and Kazakhstan in the area of energy and other issues of bilateral cooperation. During the meeting the perspectives of development of relations between the Baltic States and the countries of Central Asia were also discussed. The Head of Lithuanian diplomacy presented Vilnius energy security conference, which is to be held on 10-11 September. Kazakhstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of the conference and its relevance, assuring of Kazakhstan’s representation at the conference.

The ministers also discussed the aspirations of both countries to preside over the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Kazakhstan strives to hold the OSCE Presidency in 2009 and Lithuania aspires to take the OSCE chair in 2010.

The heads of Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company KazMunaiGaz and Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas discussed issues of bilateral cooperation in the areas of energy and transport and the participation of the businessmen in the forum of energy companies and experts, which is to take place on 10 September during Vilnius energy security conference.

During the meetings the information on preparation for the upcoming third meeting of the Inter-Governmental Lithuanian-Kazakh Committee on 17-18 September in Astana was also exchanged.
