IN ISRAEL, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER DISCUSSES ISSUES OF HOLOCAUST EDUCATION AND REMEMBRANCE
Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė is attending the plenary meeting of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research that is taking place on 13-16 December in Haifa, Israel.
Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Markas Zingeris, representatives from Lithuania’s Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also taking part in the delegation led by the Vice-Minister.The session discusses current issues of Holocaust education, academic research, the role of museums and memorials for meaningful remembrance of the Holocaust victims.
During the event, the 2011 programme of the Year of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust in Lithuania was presented, as well as ongoing Holocaust education projects for general public, educators and academic community. The projects are being implemented in cooperation with the Task Force partners.
Lithuania became member of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research in 2002. This organization brings together 27 countries from all around the world that joined the 2000 Stockholm Declaration. The Declaration calls for efforts to keep alive the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and to combat all forms of anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia. In 2011, the Netherlands will take over the chairmanship of this organization from Israel.
