IN HELSINKI, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER PRESENTED PRIORITIES OF COMMON SECURITY AND DEFENCE POLICY FOR LITHUANIA’S EU PRESIDENCY

At the discussion “The Future of European Security and Defence” on 10 October in Helsinki, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas presented priorities of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) for the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council in the run up to the December 2013 European Council, which will address the Common Security and Defence Policy.

A.Krivas noted that it was important to increase the effectiveness, visibility and impact of CSDP, enhance the development of defence capabilities, and to strengthen Europe’s defence industry and research. The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister emphasized the need for a more active cooperation between the EU and NATO in international crisis management and closer engagement of the EU’s Eastern partners in the implementation of CSDP.

Besides A.Krivas, other speakers at the conference included the Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja, Director of the European Union Institute for Security Studies Antonio Missiroli, and Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs Teija Tiilikainen.

The event was organized by the Finnish Ministry and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
