IN DUBLIN, LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER DISCUSSED THE COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND IRELAND, WHEN PREPARING TO CHAIR THE OSCE AND HOLD THE EU PRESIDENCY

On 12 December in Dublin, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius and Irish officials discussed the possibilities for the cooperation between Lithuania and Ireland, when preparing to chair the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and to hold the EU Presidency.

During the meeting with Dermot McCarthy, Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach of Ireland (the Office of the Irish Prime Minister), the Vice-Minister noted the importance of the attention of Ireland’s governmental institutions that is drawn to the affairs of Lithuanians in Ireland and discussed topical issues of foreign policy.

The Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius discussed guidelines for the cooperation between Lithuania and Ireland, when both countries are preparing to chair the OSCE and hold the EU Presidency, as well as possible joint projects of development cooperation with Assistant Secretary General, the Political Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland David Donoghue and other officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs of this country.

They also discussed the future visit of the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs to Lithuania in January 2010, exchanged opinions on topical issues of European security, the Eastern Partnership, the EU enlargement and cooperation in the field of consular activities.

Lithuania will chair the OSCE in 2011 and Ireland in 2012. In the first half year of 2013, Ireland will hold the EU Presidency and Lithuania will take over in the second half of 2013.

At Ireland’s Institute of International and European Affairs, Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius gave a speech outlining Lithuania’s approach to European Security and took part in the discussion with diplomats and political experts.
